Cookies.
Not the edible kind.
Here's what cookies we use, why we use them, and how you can control them. Last updated: 30 July 2026
At Rento, your privacy is important to us. This Cookie Policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies on our website, mobile apps, and services (the "Platform"). Please also refer to our Privacy Policy for full details on how we collect, store, use, and protect personal information in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other applicable laws.
What is a Cookie?
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) by a website when you visit it. Cookies enable the website to "remember" your actions, preferences, or settings over time, improving your experience.
Cookies may collect data about your browsing activity (e.g., pages visited, time spent, device type). While they do not always personally identify you, they can become linked to identifiable information if combined with other data (e.g., when you're logged in). On shared devices, cookies reflect usage by anyone accessing the site from that device.
Cookies are plain text files and cannot carry viruses or harm your device.
Types of Cookies We Use
We use the following categories of cookies:
First-party cookies
Set directly by Rento's Platform. These support core functionality, such as:
- Collecting analytics and usage data (e.g., how users navigate the site)
- Remembering preferences (e.g., language, location, or search filters)
- Maintaining login sessions and improving overall browsing
Third-party cookies
Set by external providers (e.g., analytics tools like Google Analytics, advertising networks, or social media plugins). These enable:
- Online advertising and targeted promotions
- Cross-site tracking for relevant ads
- Social features (e.g., share buttons or embedded content)
Cookies can be:
- Session cookies — Temporary; deleted when you close your browser.
- Persistent cookies — Stored longer (until expiry or manual deletion) to remember preferences across visits.
When and Why We Use Cookies
We use cookies only for lawful bases under POPIA, including:
- Your consent (via our cookie banner or settings)
- Necessary for contract performance (e.g., essential site functions)
- Legitimate interests (e.g., fraud prevention, security, platform improvement)
- Legal obligations
Specific purposes include (but are not limited to):
- Preventing fraud, financial crime, or unauthorised access
- Enhancing platform security
- Analysing usage to improve functionality and user experience
- Tailoring marketing/advertising (with consent)
- Recognising returning users/devices for personalised features
We do not use cookies to collect sensitive personal information without explicit consent or lawful basis.
Managing and Controlling Cookies
You have control over cookies:
Browser settings
Most browsers (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari) let you:
- Refuse or block cookies
- Delete existing cookies
- Set preferences for first- or third-party cookies
Our cookie banner
When you first visit the Platform, you'll see a banner allowing you to accept, reject, or customise cookies (except strictly necessary ones).
Opt-out tools
For third-party advertising cookies, use resources like YourAdChoices or Network Advertising Initiative opt-out pages.
Important notes:
- Blocking/disabling cookies may limit Platform functionality (e.g., login issues, incomplete searches, or reduced personalisation).
- Disabling prevents new cookies but does not remove existing ones—delete them manually via browser settings. Expired cookies auto-delete.
- On shared devices, cookies reflect collective usage.
- Rento cannot access other data on your device beyond cookies we set.
